U.S. Social Security Numbers (Issued Numbers)

The Social Security Administration issues Social Security Cards and Numbers to all citizens requesting the issue of a number. The formatting of numbers has been developed so that the sequencing of the numbers allows for the verification of the legitimacy of a Social Security number being presented to a bank or NBFI. For instance, any individual presenting a Social Security Card starting with numbers 000 is presenting a fraudulent number as the Social Security Administration has stated that it will never issue such a card. The Social Security Administration also provides a monthly report indicating what numbers have been issued and what numbers are in the process of being issued.

Data Checked:
Individual SSN numbers are checked against the Issued Numbers list to ensure that the supplied number falls into a range that has been or is currently being issued. MLDS also checks that the number does not contain an area or group number with all zeros.
